About Hubert Laws

Hubert Laws is a jazz flutist born in the Studewood section of Houston in 1939, one of the few musicians to make the flute a lead instrument across both jazz and classical music. He comes from a deeply musical family that includes the saxophonist Ronnie Laws and the singer Debra Laws.

As a teenager he played in the early Jazz Crusaders, the Houston group that grew into the Crusaders. He won a scholarship to the Juilliard School and went on to record acclaimed albums such as "Afro-Classic" and "The Rite of Spring," earning multiple Grammy nominations.

In 2011 he was named an NEA Jazz Master, the United States' highest honor in jazz.
