Johnny Nash was a singer and songwriter born in Houston in 1940, best remembered for the worldwide hit "I Can See Clearly Now." He began singing in the choir at a Houston Baptist church and got his start on local Houston television in the early 1950s.
Nash was one of the first American singers to embrace Jamaican music. After moving to Jamaica in the mid-1960s, he co-founded a record label and helped launch the early careers of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer. His own "I Can See Clearly Now" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972 and sold more than a million copies.
He returned to Houston later in life and died there in 2020.
