Khruangbin formed in Houston, where guitarist Mark Speer and drummer Donald "DJ" Johnson first played together in a church gospel band before joining with bassist Laura Lee Ochoa. The trio's name is Thai for "airplane," a nod to the Thai funk cassettes that shaped their early sound.
Famously, the band developed its hazy, globe-trotting groove rehearsing in a barn in Burton, Texas, west of Houston. Albums like The Universe Smiles Upon You, Con Todo El Mundo, Mordechai, and A La Sala, plus the Texas Sun and Texas Moon collaborations with Fort Worth's Leon Bridges, have made them one of the most distinctive live acts to come out of Texas this century.
