History of Willcox

The Thing? RoadyGoat

1965

For 200-plus miles along Interstate 10, weathered yellow billboards taunt drivers: 'The Thing? Mystery of the Desert.' The payoff is at 2631 N. Johnson Road in Dragoon, Arizona, off Exit 322, where a small museum reveals 'The Thing': a withered mummified figure widely believed to be a sideshow prop made by artist Homer Tate. Ex-lawyer Thomas Binkley Prince built the attraction and moved it to this spot in 1965; Bowlin Travel Centers runs it now, behind a sea of more than 240 billboards. A 2018 overhaul enclosed everything in a climate-controlled building and added a gleefully absurd dinosaurs-versus-aliens storyline, complete with a conspiracy wall tying the aliens to Stonehenge and beyond. Admission is a few dollars. The mystery is the point.

Dragoon, AZ RoadyGoat

Dragoon, Arizona, a place where the quiet of ranching country meets the echoes of history, has a surprising list of notable figures connected to its landscape. Established as a Southern Pacific Railroad shipping point among the Dragoon Mountains, the town's cooler summers, a blessing conferred by its 4,462-foot elevation, have drawn people seeking respite for generations. Legend even whispers that outlaw Billy the Kid once found refuge within those very mountains, adding a touch of Wild West mystique to the area. But Dragoon's influence stretches beyond the realm of dusty trails and outlaw tales.

Dragoon, AZ RoadyGoat

Dragoon, Arizona, owes its existence to the land itself. Established in 1880 as a Southern Pacific Railroad shipping point, the town nestled into a landscape sculpted by ancient forces. The Dragoon Mountains, for which the town is named, rise dramatically from the high desert floor. Their rocky peaks and hidden canyons, rumored to have once sheltered figures like Billy the Kid, offer a stark contrast to the relatively flat plains surrounding them. The elevation, a comfortable 4,462 feet, brings cooler summers than the scorching heat of Phoenix, making it a haven in the Arizona climate. The area's geography has profoundly shaped its economic and cultural identity. Ranching and agriculture remain vital activities, a testament to the enduring connection between the people and the land's potential. The quiet atmosphere, a world away from city clamor, draws those seeking solace and inspiration. And the rugged terrain has fostered a spirit of independence and resilience, mirrored in the nearby Cochise College Apaches who compete fiercely in Division I athletics. The Amerind Foundation, with its dedication to archaeological research, further reflects the area's deep connection to the past and its enduring allure for those seeking to understand the human story etched into the Arizona landscape.
