History of Agoura Hills

Calabasas, CA RoadyGoat

Calabasas wasn't always the meticulously planned community it is today. The name, derived from the Spanish word for pumpkin, hints at its agricultural past, a history largely erased by the explosive growth fueled by the expansion of the 101 Freeway. This transportation artery made the area accessible to Los Angeles in a way it hadn't been before, transforming it from a rural outpost into a desirable suburb. The elevation, pushing nearly a thousand feet, offered views that developers quickly capitalized on, promising a tranquil escape from the city below. The town's carefully cultivated image of affluence and peace didn't happen by accident. The rise of Homeowners Associations played a crucial role, setting standards for landscaping, architecture, and overall community aesthetics. While the manicured lawns and roaming peacocks contribute to the unique character, locals might tell you the real draw is something simpler: a sense of safety, good schools exemplified by the intense rivalry between Calabasas High and Agoura High on the football field, and a meticulously maintained environment where real estate, and the lifestyle it represents, thrives. The scars of the 1993 Malibu fires are a reminder that even paradise requires constant upkeep, but Calabasas remains a testament to the power of careful planning and a desire for a particular kind of California dream.

Spahn Ranch RoadyGoat

1968

What is now a quiet section of Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park, in the hills above Chatsworth, was for decades a working movie ranch. Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and dozens of Westerns were filmed among its rock outcrops and dusty trails. In the summer of 1968, Charles Manson and his followers moved into the ranch's abandoned outbuildings, trading chores for shelter with the aging owner George Spahn. They were still living there in August 1969 when several members left one night and drove into the city. The ranch structures burned in a 1970 brush fire and were never rebuilt. The trails are public now, shaded in places, and the stones themselves are the only things left that remember what happened here.
