The Capitol Records Tower RoadyGoat

1956

The Capitol Records Building rises at 1750 North Vine Street in Hollywood, a 13-story cylinder of curved white floors that's often likened to a stack of records on a turntable, though architect Louis Naidorf has said that resemblance wasn't actually his intent. Completed in 1956, it was among the first round office towers built. Atop its 90-foot spire, a red beacon has blinked 'Hollywood' in Morse code since opening night, when Samuel Morse's granddaughter Leila threw the switch; in 1992 it briefly spelled 'Capitol 50' for the label's anniversary. Inside, Capitol's basement echo chambers, designed by guitarist Les Paul, gave records by Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and the Beach Boys their signature warmth. The tower is a registered Los Angeles landmark and a Hollywood skyline icon.

History of San Fernando

San Fernando, CA RoadyGoat

The air in San Fernando is noticeably cleaner, crisper than in downtown Los Angeles – a subtle reminder that you’re a thousand feet closer to the sky. It’s a place where Friday night lights matter, the annual football game against Sylmar High a decades-old battle for bragging rights.

Van Nuys, CA RoadyGoat

The Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, a sprawling green lung in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, owes its existence, in part, to tragedy. The 1934 St. Francis Dam failure, which unleashed a catastrophic flood, underscored the need for robust flood control, indirectly shaping the landscape of Van Nuys and beyond. But the area is known for more than just disaster recovery. Van Nuys, sitting at a slightly higher elevation than downtown Los Angeles, has been a launchpad for dreams, a place where ordinary lives intersect with extraordinary talent. Marilyn Monroe, before she became a global icon, called Van Nuys home during her early modeling days.

Valley Glen, CA RoadyGoat

The city lights twinkle, a subtle reward for climbing to Valley Glen's modest 700-foot elevation. It’s a quiet vista, belying the creative energy that has flowed through these streets. This unassuming neighborhood, bordered by the concrete banks of the Los Angeles River, nurtured a certain chemistry teacher turned meth kingpin.
