It's a builder in laundry detergent, softening hard water so the soap can do its job. It shows up in actual soap, in paper, in water treatment, even toothpaste. There's a decent chance the window you're looking through, the bottle in your hand, and the detergent under your sink all trace a thread back to a crusty rock pulled out of a desert lakebed in California.

Trona High School plays football on dirt. Not patchy, neglected grass, actual bare dirt and sand, a field the team nicknamed The Pit. It isn't laziness; it's chemistry. The same alkaline, salty ground that makes this place a mineral treasure makes it brutal on living things. The soil is eroded desert mountain mixed with leftover salt from a vanished ancient sea, and grass simply will not take hold in it under the searing heat. So the home team leaned in and called themselves the Sandmen, a hundred yards of dirt all their own. The crew waters and drags the field on game day to keep it safe, but it stays bare. It's a perfect, slightly absurd lesson: the very minerals that built the town also poisoned the ground against a lawn.
