Donner Pioneer Monument RoadyGoat

At Donner Memorial State Park on the edge of Truckee stands the Pioneer Monument, a bronze of three settlers gazing west atop a granite pedestal. The pedestal is 22 feet tall on purpose: that was the depth of the snow that trapped the Donner Party here in the winter of 1846-47. The emigrant wagon train, caught by early storms just short of the pass now bearing its name, was stranded for months near these cabin sites; of roughly 90 people, 42 died of starvation and exposure, and some survivors resorted to eating the dead. The monument was dedicated in 1918 near the site of one of the party's cabins. The park's visitor center tells the full, harrowing story. (Honest note: precise tallies vary slightly by source, but the broad scale, about 90 in the party, fewer than half surviving, is well documented.)
