The Allman Brothers' Big House RoadyGoat

1970

This Tudor-style house at 2321 Vineville Avenue in Macon was the communal home of The Allman Brothers Band, their families, and crew from 1970 to 1973. Band members and partners moved in together during the group's creative peak, and songs and ideas took shape under its roof during the era of 'Eat a Peach' and the live 'At Fillmore East.' The home weathered hard times too — guitarist Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley both died in motorcycle accidents in Macon roughly a year apart, in 1971 and 1972, just blocks apart. Reopened in 2009 as The Big House Museum, it now holds the world's largest collection of Allman Brothers instruments, guitars, stage gear, and memorabilia. It's a few minutes from downtown Macon, the city the band always called home base.
