His family moved here from Duluth in 1948 when he was about seven, and he lived here until leaving for the University of Minnesota in 1959, a few years before reinventing himself as Bob Dylan in Greenwich Village. Hibbing sits on Minnesota's Iron Range beside the Hull-Rust-Mahoning pit, one of the world's largest open-pit iron mines; its booms and busts shaped the town's hard-edged character. (Note: this is his boyhood/teenage home, not a birthplace — Dylan was born in Duluth.) The house is privately owned by a collector and not generally open inside, though the exterior is a quiet pilgrimage stop.
