History of Northfield

Where the James Gang Met Its Match RoadyGoat

1876

The old First National Bank still stands at 408 Division Street in Northfield, now a museum run by the Northfield Historical Society. On September 7, 1876, the James-Younger Gang, eight riders including Jesse and Frank James and the three Younger brothers, tried to rob it. Acting cashier Joseph Lee Heywood refused to open the safe (he claimed a time lock he couldn't bypass) and was shot dead. But townspeople grabbed their own guns and opened fire from the surrounding storefronts. Two outlaws died in the street; the gang fled wounded. A massive manhunt followed: Charlie Pitts was killed and the three Youngers captured near Madelia two weeks later. Only Jesse and Frank escaped. The bungled raid effectively ended the James-Younger Gang.
