History of Roswell

Roswell's UFO Museum RoadyGoat

1947

Inside a restored 1930s movie theater at 114 N Main Street in downtown Roswell sits the International UFO Museum and Research Center, founded in 1991. It anchors the world's most famous UFO legend: in July 1947, a rancher found odd debris northwest of town, and the Roswell Army Air Field briefly issued a press release announcing it had recovered a 'flying disc.' The military quickly retracted it, calling the wreckage a weather balloon, and decades later attributed it to Project Mogul, a then-secret high-altitude balloon program for detecting Soviet nuclear tests. The museum lays out the original news clippings, witness statements, and the competing explanations side by side. It draws visitors from around the globe and turned Roswell into the unofficial alien capital of America.
