Sugarcreek: The Sweet Is Maple, the Town Is Swiss RoadyGoat
A town called Sugarcreek sounds like it ought to be all about sugar. Two surprises wait here. First, the 'sugar' isn't cane or candy. The town takes its name from Sugar Creek, which was itself named for the sugar maple trees lining its banks, the kind tapped for syrup. Second, the town's real claim to fame isn't sugar at all. It's cheese. Swiss immigrants settled this corner of Ohio's Amish country and brought their cheese-making with them, turning Sugarcreek into the heart of Ohio's Swiss cheese industry and earning it the nickname 'Little Switzerland of Ohio,' complete with a Swiss festival and one of the world's largest cuckoo clocks. Sweet name, but the flavor is maple and Swiss cheese.
