History of Bixby

The Golden Driller RoadyGoat

1966

Towering over the Tulsa Fairgrounds (Expo Square, near 21st Street and Pittsburg Avenue) is the Golden Driller, a 76-foot, 43,500-pound statue of an oil worker resting one hand on a real derrick salvaged from a depleted field in Seminole, Oklahoma. Earlier temporary versions appeared at the International Petroleum Exposition in 1953 and 1959; this permanent figure was redesigned and installed in 1966. It's one of the tallest free-standing statues in the United States, and Oklahoma made it the official state monument in 1979. Built to survive Oklahoma weather, its belt buckle alone reads 'TULSA.' It has been repainted and patched many times, and locals occasionally dress it up, once even in a giant face mask.

Okmulgee, OK RoadyGoat

Okmulgee, Oklahoma, a place where the past and present intertwine, holds a unique position in the state's history. As the capital of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, it’s always been a center of activity. The Creek Council House, standing since 1878, is a testament to that, the oldest government building in Oklahoma. Even the town's name, meaning "boiling waters" in the Muscogee Creek language, speaks to the area's natural character. Though it maintains a quiet, small-town charm, Okmulgee has undoubtedly influenced the wider world.

Okmulgee, OK RoadyGoat

Okmulgee, Oklahoma, a place name that rolls off the tongue like the waters it describes – "boiling waters" in the Muscogee Creek language. That name hints at the town's deep connection to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, which chose this spot as their capital. The Creek Council House, rising up since 1878, still stands as a testament to that history. It's the oldest government building in Oklahoma, a tangible reminder of Okmulgee's role as the Nation's political and cultural heart. The town became a trading hub, a place where cultures met and commerce flowed, all under the Oklahoma sky. While Okmulgee sits a bit higher than its neighbor Tulsa, its history isn't about peaks and valleys but rather a steady, quiet strength. The Muscogee (Creek) Nation headquarters remains a vital part of the community today, and echoes of the past resonate through the present. And on Friday nights, the roar of the crowd at an Okmulgee High School Bulldogs football game carries on a tradition of local pride. The Tulsa Drillers provide nearby thrills, but Okmulgee itself offers something different: a strong sense of community, a small-town charm built on a foundation of history and heritage.
