History of Owasso

The Golden Driller RoadyGoat

1966

Towering over the Tulsa Fairgrounds (Expo Square, near 21st Street and Pittsburg Avenue) is the Golden Driller, a 76-foot, 43,500-pound statue of an oil worker resting one hand on a real derrick salvaged from a depleted field in Seminole, Oklahoma. Earlier temporary versions appeared at the International Petroleum Exposition in 1953 and 1959; this permanent figure was redesigned and installed in 1966. It's one of the tallest free-standing statues in the United States, and Oklahoma made it the official state monument in 1979. Built to survive Oklahoma weather, its belt buckle alone reads 'TULSA.' It has been repainted and patched many times, and locals occasionally dress it up, once even in a giant face mask.
