The town owes its existence to the Santa Fe Railroad, which rolled through in 1887 and instantly transformed the area. Named for a railroad official, Brinton W. Woodward, it quickly became a vital hub, a place where cattlemen and farmers could ship their goods. Even today, the railroad's legacy lingers, a reminder of the town's origins as a crucial link in the westward expansion. Some say a different kind of treasure is buried nearby, hidden near the site of the old military fort – a local legend that adds a touch of mystery to the plains. The fortunes of Woodward have always been tied to the land. Agriculture, particularly ranching and wheat farming, sustained the community for decades. But the Dust Bowl of the 1930s brought hardship, turning fertile fields into barren dust. More recently, oil and gas have become important drivers of the economy, a boom-and-bust cycle that continues to shape Woodward's story. A fire whirl is the small one, a swirling column of flame and embers feeding off surface heat and wind. A true fire tornado is the rare monster, stretched by the towering pyrocumulonimbus cloud a big wildfire builds over itself. On July 26, 2018, the Carr Fire near Redding, California, produced one of the strongest ever recorded in the United States. The National Weather Service rated its rotation at EF-3 strength, the same scale used for ordinary tornadoes. It stayed on the ground roughly thirty minutes and contributed to four deaths. Same physics that haunts the plains, just lit from below instead of falling from the sky.
