Haystack Rock — The Goonies' Sea Stack RoadyGoat

Rising off Cannon Beach about a mile and a half south of downtown stands Haystack Rock, a 235-foot basalt monolith formed by lava flows roughly fifteen to seventeen million years ago. It's one of the most filmed landmarks on the Oregon coast. In 'The Goonies' (1985), the kids line up a doubloon with the rock's silhouette to find the path to One-Eyed Willy's treasure, and the truck-rally beach scenes were shot at its base. It also appears in 'Point Break' (1991) and 'Kindergarten Cop.' Today it's a protected marine garden and tufted-puffin nesting site, ringed by tidepools at low tide. (Note: it is not climbable, and rangers patrol the intertidal zone in season.)
