Burlington sits on a bluff above Lake Champlain with the Adirondacks across the water, and its sunsets are the stuff of postcards. It's also a town that punches far above its size on culture. In 1978, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield took a five-dollar correspondence course in ice-cream making and opened their first scoop shop in a renovated gas station on the corner of St. Paul and College streets. (The original building is gone, replaced by a parking lot, but a sidewalk plaque marks the spot.) That little stand grew into a global brand. A few years later, in 1983, four University of Vermont students started a band called Phish in Burlington; they'd go on to become one of the most devoted live followings in American music. Lake views, homemade ice cream, and improvised jams, all from one small Vermont city.
