This unassuming bridge was once a crucial target in the final days of the Civil War. In April 1865, as Lee's Confederate army retreated westward, they desperately needed to cross the High Bridge to reach supplies and regroup. Union forces, recognizing its strategic importance, attempted to destroy the bridge to cut off Lee's escape. Several skirmishes and battles occurred here as both sides fought for control. The Battle of High Bridge was a Confederate tactical victory — on April 6, the Union force sent to destroy the bridge was nearly annihilated, with roughly 800 men captured. On April 7, Confederates tried to burn the bridge before Union pursuers could cross, but Union troops saved the wagon bridge and maintained their pursuit. By keeping pressure on Lee's army, the Union ultimately forced their eventual surrender at Appomattox Court House just days later, effectively ending the Civil War. Today, you can visit High Bridge Trail State Park and walk along the preserved rail line. While parts of the original bridge are gone, the remaining structure provides a tangible connection to this pivotal moment in American history.
