History of Quincy

Tallahassee - Narváez at Apalachee (Anhaica)

1528

In late June 1528, after marching nearly two months through the Florida interior, the Narváez expedition reached the Apalachee capital — a moment they had endured starvation and Indian attacks to see. They had been told it was a wealthy city like Tenochtitlán. What they found was a settled farming village of about 40 thatch-roofed houses set among cornfields, near present-day Tallahassee. The site is known to archaeologists as Anhaica and has been excavated near downtown. There was no gold, no treasure, no empire. The Apalachee, skilled longbow archers, harassed the Spaniards for 26 days. Realizing he had marched 300 men into a trap, Narváez ordered a retreat to the coast — a march that would end at the Bay of Horses, raft-building, and a desperate Gulf crossing. The Apalachee discovery is the moment Spanish North America's economy of conquest collapsed: there was no second Aztec empire waiting north of Mexico.
